Build a strong safety culture through active safety committees.
The Safety Committee Program brings together representatives from across the organization to support workplace safety. Committees conduct regular meetings and inspections and help develop policies and procedures that promote a safe working environment.
Establish a clear and comprehensive safety committee policy/charter that outlines the expectations, including purpose, roles, responsibilities, membership, operating rules and training.
Implement a Safety Committee that meets at least monthly to identify and address safety concerns.
- The committee must be composed of labor and management with management representation not to exceed labor representation.
- Meet as a group at least once a month.
- Written agendas and meeting minutes must be clearly documented
- All decisions should be made by majority vote.
- Member should serve a continuous term of at least 1 year.
- Members should receive applicable safety training – general and specific safety training and information on accident and illness prevention related to employers’ business.
- Employers selecting the Safety Committee Program for the first time must ensure the safety coordinator and any employees involved in the implementation complete WSI’s Safety Committee Program online course within the first 90 days of their eligible policy period.
