The Safety Action Menu (SAM) program supports employers in developing and strengthening safety initiatives that reduce workplace incidents, prevent injuries, and help control workers’ compensation costs.

  • Encourage the adoption of comprehensive safety programs.
  • Enhance overall workplace safety through proactive measures.
  • Reduce workplace injuries and illnesses and associated costs.
  • Provide financial incentives for employers dedicated to safety.

  1. Employers must complete an online application via myWSI 30 days before the policy period begins.
  2. WSI will confirm participation and assign a Safety Consultant.
  3. Establish clear and comprehensive policies that outline procedures, roles & responsibilities.
    • All policies should be approved, signed and dated by top management. All policies should be communicated effectively to all employees.
  4. Documentation - Proper documentation is crucial to ensure the effectiveness and compliance of safety programs. Employers must maintain detailed records of all safety-related activities, including:
    • Policies to implement program requirements
    • Training sessions and attendance
    • Safety inspections and audits
    • Employee feedback and suggestions
  5. Program requirements must be completed by the end of the 11th month of the employer policy period.
  6. WSI will audit annually for compliance, completing audits by the 15th day of the last month of the policy period.
  7. Employers implementing or maintaining program requirements may receive up to a 15% premium discount. Multiple programs can be combined for up to a 15% discount (each SAM program is eligible for a 5% discount), but discounts cannot reduce premium below the statutory minimum.

  • Employers with delinquent accounts, no insurance, or not in good standing may not be eligible for discounts under the SAM program.
  • Volunteer accounts are not eligible to participate in the programs.
  • Employers enrolled in the large deductible program are not eligible to participate in the programs.

Note: Many of the programs involve policy development. It is good practice to have your Human Resource Department and attorney review all policies to ensure compliance with applicable law(s).

By fostering a culture of safety and recognizing the efforts of effective programs, employers can significantly reduce the risk of workplace injuries and enhance overall productivity. Investing in such programs demonstrates an organization’s commitment to the well-being of its employees and contributes to a safer, more efficient workplace.
