Meal reimbursement is allowed when an injured employee travels away from the normal place of living residence for 4 hours or more. An injured employee will not be reimbursed for the first quarter (6 a.m. to 12 p.m.) if travel began after 7 a.m. To claim expenses for the second or third quarter, travel must begin at least 1 hour before the start of the quarter being claimed and continue at least 1 hour into that quarter. Meal reimbursement amounts for each quarter of a 24-hour period, effective October 1, 2024, are outlined in North Dakota Century Code § 44-08-04. M&IE stands for meals and incidental expenses. It is a federal rate set by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) that represents the daily allowance for meals and small travel-related expenses.
