Career Description




Develop, promote, schedule, and deliver virtual programs, field trips, virtual field trips, educational social media posts, off-site outreach, interpretation for schools, visitors, and others, as well as coach seasonal and part-time staff in doing the same.Develop and create interpretive programming for on-site tours and special events that include historical themes and/or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math topics relevant to the history of the site.Work closely with the agency's Education Outreach Coordinator to serve as a liaison with educators, schools, and students.Serve as backup to the Site Supervisor as needed.Support day-to-day operations including, but not limited to, maintenance troubleshooting, program administration and documentation including gathering statistics and providing regular reports.Familiarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and its other state historic sites.Other duties as assigned.The Outreach Coordinator will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and friendly and pleasant demeanor towards in-person and virtual visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years old. Ability to communicate in-person and online with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language, hands-on, and online skills.Willingness and ability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings. Basic online and computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite, video conferencing, and social media. Ability to accurately complete required forms and reports such as timesheets, till counts, reservations, etc. Able to work independently and often without supervision. Must participate in interpretive training and attain a National Association of Interpretation certificationPreference will be given to applicants with previous experience in cultural interpretation, history, education, or museum education; or with a degree in history, public history, education, museum studies, or a closely related field. Your primary responsibilities will include: Organize and schedule America250 ND commission meetings. Work with North Dakota communities, tribal nations, state partners, the commission, and Historical Society team members to promote programs, events, and activities to ensure that the semiquincentennial is an authentic, inclusive, vibrant statewide commemoration. Facilitate coordination and communication between participating state agencies and partners to ensure one voice in messaging, marketing, and implementation of state- sponsored 250th commemorative activities and initiatives. Coordinate with the Audience Engagement and Museum (AEM) team of the State Historical Society to develop communication strategies to bring awareness to and interest to America250 ND, including, but not limited to, developing a statewide calendar of events, producing news releases, organizing media events and working closely with media, and coordinating America250 merchandise. Monitor budget and make recommendations for expenditures. Coordinate with the AEM team to support the development of exhibits, programming, and educational materials related to the 250th commemoration. Record America250 ND meeting minutes, provide monthly update reports to the ND commission, and produce a final state report covering all details of the America250 ND planning and execution. To be successful in this position, you should have a combination of related education and demonstrated experience totaling a minimum of five years. This could look like a bachelor's degree in communications, business, marketing, event planning, or other closely related field and one year of experience or a high school diploma (or equivalent) and five years of experience. A passion and interest for North Dakota history is a plus!

The main responsibility of the visitor service representative is to deliver exceptional customer service to our guests. This includes welcoming visitors, assisting with facility rentals, and maintaining resources at the information desk.Other responsibilities of the visitor service team include, but is not limited to: Physically greet all guests upon entering the ND Heritage Center & State Museum, welcoming them to the facility and providing direction.Remain visible and available to guests throughout the entirety of their visit, serving as their primary point of contact and addressing any inquiries. Helping with facility rentals as needed.Ensuring the organization and upkeep of brochures and information materials. To be eligible for this position, you must be at least 16 years old, have customer service experience, have the ability to move boxes of brochures weighing up to 35 pounds, and the ability to escort visitors around the building. Additionally, the successful candidate must have an engaging, enthusiastic, and outgoing personality, have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adhere to a schedule, and willingness to work flexible hours. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with public speaking and/or theater and working with children of all ages.

The successful applicant will:Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, welcome and orient them, lead guided tours of Fort Mandan, lead hands-on activities, and assist with special events.Interpret site history enjoyably and accurately, making good use of research, training, hands on history items, props, and programming.Assess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitors.Assist with store operations that includes keeping merchandise neatly displayed and dusted, keeping track of inventory, and operating and reconciling cash register, while following policies and procedures.Clean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding outdoor plantings, dusting, emptying trash receptacles.Familiarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and other state historic sites.
