Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI)
Determination of the injured worker's MMI status by the provider is required for claim management. MMI is the point at which the injury has stabilized. There is no expectation of further recovery or improvement, even with additional medical intervention.

Medical documentation must include the injured worker's MMI status, when appropriate. Alternatively, the C3 form is an option to report MMI status. Chiropractors can also report MMI status on the Chiropractic Progress/Final Report (C25) form.

Permanent Partial Impairment (PPI)
Once MMI is determined and an impairment rating may reach 14% whole body, WSI schedules a PPI evaluation. Evaluations are conducted only by providers trained in the 6th Edition of the American Medical Association (AMA) Guides to Permanent Partial Impairment.

General Impairment Information
  • Treating provider cannot perform a PPI evaluation
  • All body parts included in the claim must reach MMI status before a PPI evaluation is scheduled
  • Impairment awards for amputation, loss of vision and loss of an eye are separately identified in the Injury subsection of the North Dakota Century Code
