Meet our medical director

Dr. Luis S. Vilella, natural of San Juan, Puerto Rico, began his duties at WSI as full-time medical director in May 15, 2006. Dr. Vilella completed his residency training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (Physiatry) at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in 1995. For eleven years prior to joining WSI he was actively involved in the practice of general physiatry, working with patients of all age groups and engaged in providing rehabilitative care to the injured, disabled, and those recovering from illness, with the expectation of maximizing function and quality of life.

Dr. Vilella is accomplished in the disease/injury management model emphasizing collaboration and interaction between health-care professionals to coordinate and manage care of patient populations through the continuum of disease and across health-care delivery systems. He is also an advocate for the rational integration of pharmacologic, behavioral, and rehabilitation strategies in the treatment of acute and chronic pain syndromes.

As medical director, Dr. Vilella is the organization's leader regarding clinical issues and decisions. He works with the injury management team and with WSI administration to ensure that thoughtful, cost effective, excellence of care is being provided to injured workers. Moreover, he assists in the implementation of service programs and appropriate medical policies in effort to identify clinical practices of care that are expected to bring the most favorable health outcomes and merit its application for individual injured workers in specific care settings.

Dr. Vilella currently holds full and unrestricted licenses issued by Illinois Medical Licensing Board, New Mexico Medical Board, and the North Dakota State Board of Medical Examiners. He is also a member of the American College of Physician Executives.
