WSI created a Special
Investigations Unit in August 1994. In
June 1995, we had the first workers’ compensation fraud conviction in the state
– this was recognized as a significant victory for honest employers and stands
as a milestone in WSI’s continuing battle against all types of workers’
compensation fraud: employer, injured worker, and provider.
Fraud referrals come from many different sources. In
processing a workers’ compensation claim, a claims analyst may notice a detail
that warrants further investigation; an anonymous caller may report suspected
fraudulent behavior through our Hot Line (1-800-243-3331); or a concerned citizen may submit a tip electronically through our online
Fraud Reporting service.
