On January 1, 2006, Workforce Safety and Insurance (WSI) introduced the Hazard Elimination Learning Program (HELP) Grant.
The purpose of the HELP Grant Program was to provide economic assistance to North Dakota employers to
improve worker safety and to gather information on the effectiveness of the specific safety interventions.
The HELP Grant offered eligible North Dakota employers the opportunity to purchase a safety intervention (equipment, etc.) in an effort to reduce or eliminate the injuries or illnesses attached to a specific work task or operation.
In order to participate in the program, the employers had to be in "good standing" status with WSI, have had an active employer account for the two years prior to application, and provide the necessary funds to purchase the equipment with this 5-1 matching cash grant. The grant awards were based upon the employer's standard premium for the last completed premium year prior to application.
The table below matches standard premiums with grant amount eligibility:
| Premium Size |
WSI Matching Maximum |
| Minimum - $2,000 |
$10,000 |
| $2,001 - $5,000 |
$25,000 |
| $5,001 and greater |
$50,000 |
All applications received at WSI were reviewed and scored by a Grant Review Team. In return for this grant funding,
successful applicants were asked to provide comparative information for the two years prior to the safety intervention
and the two years after the safety intervention was implemented. Overall claims, claims to the specific worker
population affected by the intervention and various other data elements comparing the before and after periods were collected.
As the grant recipients complete their data reporting cycles, information regarding their specific intervention
will be made available. The information provided on this website is a summary of the information provided by the
grant recipients and information specific to the employer's claims history.
Disclaimer: WSI is providing this information as a safety service. WSI does not endorse any specific product
or name brand of equipment. When implemented correctly by the employer, the goal of the HELP Grant safety
intervention is to reduce or eliminate injury or illness affiliated with a specific work task or process.
WSI does not guarantee or warrant that the implementation of such a plan will result in the reduction or
elimination of injuries or illnesses. In the event of a workplace injury or illness, the employee and the
employer's sole and exclusive remedy is the worker's compensation laws of the appropriate jurisdiction. WSI
